Yoga For Elite Athletes
Robert Probert asked:
Did you know that there are many professional athletes that use yoga as a way to improve strength, agility and flexibility? Many people are surprised to find out that some of the best athletes in the world stay in peak physical condition by practicing yoga regularly.
Hockey goaltenders have some of the most demanding physical requirements in the world of sports. They need to be extremely flexible to allow them to reach and stretch for pucks that are shot away from their body. They also need to be incredibly agile and athletic (though many people think goalies just stand there and let pucks hit them…which could not be further from the truth), goalies have to be quick while keeping control of their body so they are always ready for the next shot. One professional goaltender who plays for the Boston Bruins named Tim Thomas, has made it publicly known that he practices yoga regularly and that it has had an incredibly positive impact on his ability to be one of the best goalies in the National Hockey League.
While many athletes might be of the opinion that yoga is not something that they should be doing because it seems too casual, they are clearly missing out on what really should be their primary source of physical conditioning. With practicing yoga regularly athletes can keep their bodies fresh while maintaining a high level of strength.
Yoga will also help you to keep your mind right while competing day in and day out. It is essential for elite athletes to be able to stay focused in order to be a consistent competitor, and many athletes really struggle with this. It is clearly just as important to make sure that your mind is just as ready as your body is. Yoga is, without a doubt, the single best way to keep an athlete is the best all-around shape to succeed at whatever sport they are participating in.
Though yoga has a reputation as being a bit trendy, and many people do not feel that it is intense enough to help them improve themselves because of the laid back nature of yoga, if you do not give it a try, you are not giving yourself a chance to realize the incredible benefits that come with implementing the yoga lifestyle into your life as an athlete. If you do some research on yoga, you will soon realize that you should not dismiss yoga as a legitimate physical activity, no matter how elite of an athlete you are.
